Our History - By founder David Ryall
The concept of Photographers Without Borders has its roots in a song lyric by a band called Faithless.
"Show us starving kids through expensive lenses
On a far and distant shore
Of which, when sold, could feed a good few
Hey mister rich - Why don't you help the poor."
"Love lives on my street" by Faithless.
I first heard ths song in late 2004 as I was about to embark on a short trip to China. I was 22 and was going there primarily to publish a collective photography book. However this also gave me the opportunity to persure my as yet un-quenched thirst for travel and landscape phohography. As I travelled though China, capturing images of the people and the landscapes, the song started to run though my head, especially that verse.
A year later, I returned to China to publish another book, and continued onto Tibet for my first major trip overseas. Two an a half weeks in a country where I didn't speak the language and was unprepared for the beauty and ugliness I would see. A stunning landscape at the top of the world that was the home for a people whose culture had been desimated though 50 years of Chinese rule.....the song played louder.
As I was capturing the beautiful landscape of Tibet and meeting its people, I started to think about what I wanted to do with the photos. I wasn't really interested in selling them as I took them for the sheer pleasure. They gave me a creative release from my day-to-day commercial and domestic photography. However, asides from holding small exhibitions mainly for friends, I didn't at that time descide on what path I would take.
It wasn't until 14 months later at the start of 2007, as I has just returned from a month in New Zealand and was already plannig a trip to Antarctica, that the idea came to me. Since 2004 the song had been playing though my head, and I finally thought "well, why not just do as they say?". Faithless had already come up with the concept, I just had to figure out how to do it.
As of May 2009, PWB as been registered as a business in Autralia. Our mission is to sell beautiful and inspirational photos taken all over the world, with the profits going back to the countries of origin. We are currently establishing links with charitable organisations across the globe who provide practical assistance through humanitarian and environmental projects. Over the next few months, we will be launching our website to display and sell our prints, with the ultimate goal of establishing retail galleries in Australia, the USA and parts of Europe.
